Popularly known as anabolic androgenic steroids, these are drugs that have a molecular structure similar to cyclic steroid ring systems.
They behave similarly to testosterone in the body.
They promote the increase of protein in the bloodstream and within cells with a special preference for boosting protein levels in the skeletal muscles.

The Encyclopedia of Sports Medicine & Science defines anabolic androgenic steroids as drugs resembling androgenic hormones (or male hormones) such as testosterone.
What are steroids made of?
Natural steroids in the body are made by testes, which produce testosterone.
Synthetic steroids are derivates of the male hormone testosterone.
These synthetic male hormones and testosterone derivatives have what are called ‘anabolic’ and ‘androgenic’ effects.
These two terms have become more or less interchangeable words supposedly meaning something, which affects the normal development of both the primary and secondary sexual characteristics in males.
In reality the two words mean very different things as we’ll cover here.
Anabolic androgenic steroids are best known for their use in sports and in competitive bodybuilding for their ability to increase the production of lean muscle tissue.
The other main performance enhancement effects include improved muscle twitch response for improvements in an athlete’s speed of movement.
Other sought after effects include the reduction of fatty tissue, increased energy, and aerobic capacity as well as the protection of joints from the pain caused by heavy physical activity.
Professional athletes of all kinds buy anabolic androgenic steroids to achieve faster recovery times, increased stamina and more muscle mass for less time.
What are the effects of anabolic androgenic steroid use?
The effects of anabolic androgenic steroids on physical performance vary greatly from one type of steroid to the next as well as within each individual user.
Carefully controlled, double-blind studies have produced conflicting data.
In the studies that showed beneficial effects, the body weight of test participants increased by roughly four pounds of lean muscle tissue on average and an increase in lifting strength of about 15 to 30 pounds.
Nearly all of the studies failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect on aerobic capacity or endurance.
For reasons of ethical constraints, however, these studies have not been run in a way that would be sufficiently analogous to the way an athlete would tend to take them for training purposes.
The anabolic androgenic steroid studies have, more often than not, lasted no longer than six to eight weeks and have- in almost every case- used subjects who were not trained competitive athletes.
The majority of the changes in the strength of the participants during the early portions of the studies are neurological. This indicates that the increased strength is mostly caused by an enhanced ability to recruit motor units.
Changes in muscle tissue size and muscle unit availability would, it is expected, begin to show up over lengths of time longer than the studies have been able to show.
Studies lasting only six to eight weeks would show only neural changes.
Gains made in uncontrolled instances have been far more impressive than what science has been able to demonstrate.
Individuals working on their own, often- unfortunately- ignoring safety issues, have made strength gains of as much as thirty to forty pounds of lifting ability.
These gains were achieved in comparable amounts of time to those used by the researchers but were preceded by prior cycles of use. Of course, many of these results are not well documented, but a few are.
Anyone interested in learning just how extraordinary the results athletes have been able to achieve need only look at the top performing athletes in whatever sport you choose.
In a survey of 500 users more than 60% of the participants claimed they were able to make gains ranging between 45 and 60 pounds of lifting ability and between 10 and 20 pounds of lean muscle tissue gains.
These participant’s claims about their gains in unwanted fat tissue were reportedly lower than in research studies with a few anomalies with fat gains slightly above the tested results.
What does it mean by anabolic?
Being in an anabolic state means that your body is primed for muscle growth.
Anabolism definition: anabolism is the opposite of catabolism.
The anabolic process functions to repair and reform molecules to make them become larger and more effective.
What does it mean by androgenic?
One of the most important of the primary sex hormones, androgens are composed of a four-ringed carbon core similar in structure to cholesterol.
Androgens function is to promote and maintain masculine sexual traits by binding with androgen receptors. Testosterone is the body’s primary androgen.
All Anabolic Androgenic steroids have a rating attached to them that compares them to Testosterone as a baseline figure.
Adolescent males are considered to be the group most at risk of suffering the negative side effects of anabolic androgenic steroids.
Young men have both low self-control and a low tolerance for the toxic effects of these drugs.
Steroids disrupt the natural development of teenage boy’s physiology and early use amplifies the risk of dangerous and deadly disorders developing over time.
Young women are considered to be equally vulnerable to the toxic effects of steroids but are less likely to use them. Female adolescent athletes, however, are somewhat at risk.
Practically all of the anabolic steroids that exist are available for purchase somewhere on the Internet.
Despite the dangers of impure products and legal sanctions- these substances remain massively popular.
Anabolic steroids are more or less universally banned in all industrialized western countries and major sporting organizations around the world.
However, the pressure to perform and the rewards and glory of continue to drive many competitive athletes to risk everything for the chance at a winning edge.
Legal restrictions aside, there is some controversy about the truth and severity of the side effects of anabolic steroids.
Proponents of these drugs claim that there are relatively safe methods of use that science has chosen to remain willfully ignorant about due to researcher’s unwillingness to conduct their studies outside of accepted parameters.
These same proponents accuse lawmakers and sports authorities of driving steroid users underground where they are in much greater danger than they would be otherwise.
What are the side effects of taking steroids?
The side effects of steroids are still quite real.
Regardless of what the proponents say, there is still a considerable risk of damage to the heart, kidneys and liver, particularly with oral steroids on the liver.
Lesser side effects of anabolic androgenic steroids such as acne and altered testosterone production are well documented.Anabolic Androgenic SteroidsAnabolic SteroidsAnabolic Steroids for SaleAnabolic Steroids Side EffectsAnabolic Steroids UKAnabolic SupplementsAnabolic TestosteroneAndrogenic SteroidsLegal Anabolic SteroidsList Anabolic SteroidsNatural Anabolic Steroid SupplementsOral Anabolic SteroidsTop Anabolic SteroidsTypes of Anabolic Steroids
