Before clarifying what bovine growth hormone does, it’s important to understand human growth hormone (HGH).
HGH is produced and secreted by the pituitary gland, one of the many glands that make up the endocrine system in humans.
In humans, HGH produced by the pituitary gland is known as somatotropin.
Cattle also naturally produce what is known as bovine somatotropin (BST).
Today’s technologies have enabled scientists to develop recombinant bovine somatotropin using genetic technologies similar to DNA technologies.
In some cases, only one amino acid differentiates (chemically), produced naturally by a cow and the synthetic form. Each of these forms of hormone stimulates production of cow’s milk.
This occurs because of the hormone’s ability to increase another hormone similar to both man and cow, known as insulin-like growth factor or IGF-1.
One of the concerns regarding using it to increase milk production in cows has been related to the possible effect of that milk on humans, and mainly the increase of IGF-1 factors.
Do these risks cause health effects? What about cancer?
Another concern regarding its use is that cows may be at an increased risk of mastitis or udder infections. These infections are treated with antibiotics.

A number of studies have sought to determine the answers to questions about side effects.
According to the American Cancer Society, neither synthetic nor natural bovine growth hormone has been noted to affect any receptors of HGH.
While IGF-1 levels may be a little higher in milk that has been treated with rBGH than untreated milk, these concentrations have been determined to be quite a bit less than even the normal variations that occur in the cow’s milk caused by natural factors.
Additional research is required to definitively answer such concerns.
One of the studies noted by the American Cancer Society determined that the IGF-1 factor that could possibly be absorbed in human bodies represented less than one-tenth (0.09%) of the normal, human daily synthesis of IGF-1 in adults.
What about infants? Milk from rBGH treated cow’s milk was determined to increase in infants’ normal production of IGF-1 by less than 1%.
So what exactly does rBGH do in the human body? Not much.
To date, a number of associations, committees, and health organizations have continued to study the effect of rBGH on dairy cows as well as on humans.
These organizations include the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Health Canada, the Canada Veterinarian Association, the United States National Institutes of Health, the American Medical Association, and the joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.
Use of rBGH to increase milk production in cows has declined and as of 2007, less than one in every five cows was injected with rBGH.
While studies have been inconclusive in regard to the effect of it on humans, studies and research is likely to continue, as does the increased use of antibiotics to treat a number of dairy cows, cattle, and other food sources for human consumption.
