Does HGH make you taller?
Human growth hormone, more commonly known as HGH is manufactured in the pituitary gland of the brain, and is most commonly known for increasing height during childhood.
In cases where an individual experience has a deficiency in this function of the master gland of the body, growth hormones in the form of injections may be recommended by a pediatrician or other health care provider.
If it does make you taller, what kind of a height difference can you expect? The endocrine system is responsible for the secretion of chemical compounds known as hormones into the circulatory system.
A number of glands compose the endocrine system, including the pituitary.

Children experiencing a deficiency of HGH do not grow at the same rate as their peers in the same age group.
In fact, they can be quite a bit shorter. But can HGH therapies such as injections or tablets really make you grow taller, and if so, by how much?
According to a Medical News Today article (injections add height, but kids stay short) stated that injections can increase height in otherwise healthy children of extremely short stature.
Still, maximum height gain achieved appeared to peek at roughly three inches, and at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars.
In a number of studies, injections were given almost daily for a minimum of six months. Some utilized recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH) injections.
The pituitary gland receives instructions from the hypothalamus, which stimulates or inhibits a number of hormone secretions.
It is situated in the brain behind the optic nerve, surrounded by bone except for the portion of it that connects with the brain.
The pituitary gland is one of the most important in the body because it regulates the functions of other glands found within the endocrine system.
One is the growth hormone-releasing hormone known as GHRH, responsible for stimulating growth hormone secretions.
Another hormone known as somatotropin or somatostatin inhibits secretion.
A number of dysfunctional behaviors of the pituitary gland associated with growth hormone can include but are not limited to:
The secretions and optimal function of the pituitary gland in relation to growth hormone functions are most notable during childhood and adolescence as the human body goes through a number of growth spurts. As we age, these secretions decline.
These children were diagnosed with idiopathic short stature, or classified as otherwise healthy with no specific reason for the lack of growth.
The article went on to state that for approximately every half inch of the final height that resulted from that HGH therapy range costs averaged $18,000 to $36,600.
Comparing results from a number of studies, an average height growth of anywhere between 1.4 inches and three inches was noted among adolescents.
However, genetics and heredity may also play a part in the height increase in some of these children. So when considering the question does HGH make you taller, the answer is yes it can, but at what cost?
According to WebMD, a study was engaged in Sweden involved approximately 151 children who were followed over the course of two decades.
Average height achieved by those given a higher dosage of growth hormone again averaged about three inches.
The 151 children under the study either received a placebo or two different dosages of growth hormones for approximately six years.
The study also determined that the children of parents with average or normal height showed the better results, and that higher doses of approximately 66 mcg per kilogram of body weight daily over the lower dosage (approximately 33 mcg per kilogram of body weight daily) performed better.
Boys who received the placebo averaged approximately 5’5″ in overall height, while those who were given higher doses measured about two inches higher at 5’7?.
With the girls, average height achieved was 4’11”, while those treated with HGH achieved approximately 5’2″.
Note – The study was supported by the Swedish Research Council, the Foundation Vaxthuset for Children, and the Swedish Foundation for Pediatric GH Research.
Parents of children interested in treatments should always weigh the cost with benefits. It’s critical to understand the HGH side effects.
Will two to three inches of growth really matter over tens of thousands of dollars in cost? So while the answer to the question “does HGH make you taller?” may be answered in the affirmative, genetics also have a role to play in final results.
