In the name of achieving a specific athletic goal, a lot of people are looking for specific lists of synthetic anabolic steroids in different categories and purposes.
Below are most, if not all, of the major anabolic steroids on the market, (excluding all of the various brand alternatives), and their primary purpose when used as performance enhancing substances.
Some are used for post cycle therapy (PCT) at the end of a cycle using a harsh performance enhancement supplement. Buy legal steroids online here.

The following is a list of the 25 most common steroids that bodybuilders use:
The word ‘steroid’ has an interesting etymology based in the Greek language. The Greek word ‘Stere’ means ‘solid’ and was used as a measurement for cut wood, similar to the cord. The latter part of the word ‘steroid’ comes from ‘Eidos’, meaning form or shape.
This word gives us the modern suffix ‘oid’, which is often used to refer to something that resembles something else, such in the word ‘humanoid’. So the word ‘steroid’ would literally translate to ‘something that has the form or shape of a solid’.
A steroid is an organic compound with a chemical structure consisting of four connected cycloalkane rings along linked to other functional groups of atoms.
Three of the cycloalkane rings, generally labeled A, B, and C are known as cyclohexane rings and are made up of six carbon atoms.
The last ring, labeled D, is known as a cyclopentane ring and consists of five carbon atoms.
The difference between different steroid compounds lies in the structural differences between the primary four ring structure. This may involve variations in the functional groups linked to the cycloalkane rings or smaller variations in hydrogen, carbon, or oxygen atoms.
When you mention steroids to most people, they think of substances used by competitive athletes to build muscle.
This is a mistaken stereotype, however, as there are many different types of steroids with many different uses, most of which have little or nothing to do with athletic performance.
In fact, one specific type of steroid, known as corticosteroids, actually breaks down muscle tissue. There are hundreds of different types of steroids and related compounds produced by plants, animals, insects, and fungi.
These naturally created steroidal compounds are produced in specific cells and organs of these organisms. The human body itself produces several different types of steroids, including: Vitamin D, cholesterol, cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone.
Vitamin D is a specific type of steroid known as a secosteroid, which is a steroidal molecule with a broken ring. Cholesterol has a bad reputation in humans, but is a vital precursor to the synthesis of all other critical steroids produced and needed by the human body.
In other words, you cannot produce estrogen, testosterone, vitamin D, or many other vital compounds without cholesterol.
Steroids used for building muscle and improving athletic performance are known as androgenic anabolic steroids, sometimes abbreviated as AAS, or simply anabolic steroids.
The word ‘anabolic’ is what makes these steroids attractive to athletes, as ‘anabolic’ refers to the building of muscle tissue and is also derived from Greek.
In this case, it’s the Greek word ‘ana’, meaning ‘upward’, and ‘ballo’, meaning ‘to throw or cast’. Put these together, and the word ‘anabolic’ means ‘pertaining to the process of building up’.
The ‘androgenic’ part of this refers to the fact that these steroids have the potential to produce masculine traits and comes from the Greek ‘andro’, meaning ‘male’, and ‘gene’, literally meaning ‘to give birth’ or ‘to produce’.
So an androgenic anabolic steroid refers to a chemical compound consisting of cycloalkane rings that builds up tissue, particularly muscle tissue, and produces masculine traits.
There are no known steroidal compounds that can produce tissue growth without also producing masculine traits, or that produce masculine traits without building up muscle.
The primary anabolic steroid produced by the human body is also produced in many animal species, and is one with which you are probably at least somewhat familiar.
That steroid is testosterone. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and is responsible for producing secondary male sex characteristics, including lowered vocal pitch, facial and body hair, and increased size and strength of muscle.
In men, testosterone is produced by the testes. In women, testosterone is produced in much smaller amounts by the adrenal glands. Besides male sex characteristics, testosterone is also responsible for a number of other physiological functions.
In addition to testosterone, the human body also produces Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and Nandrolone, two other naturally synthesized anabolic steroids. These three steroids are the basis on which synthetic anabolic steroids are produced.
Chemists have synthesized hundreds of different anabolic steroids based on or derived from these three anabolic steroids naturally produced in the human body.
What this means is that every anabolic steroid on the market was created by the modification of one or more of these three natural steroids.
These variants are known as anabolic steroid analogues, or anabolic steroid derivatives. So testosterone analogues are simply testosterone that has had its molecular structure modified in some way.
So all anabolic steroids fall into one of the following categories:
Testosterone, Dihydrotestosterone, and Nandrolone could, then, be considered ‘parent’ hormones of all other anabolic steroids.
Technically, testosterone is the precursor hormone required by the human body to produce dihydrotestosterone and nandrolone. Without testosterone, these other two steroids cannot be made, making it the original anabolic steroid, without which none of the others would exist.
Dihydrotestosterone is a metabolic byproduct of testosterone and is produced when testosterone is metabolized by a specific enzyme known as the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. Nandrolone is produced when testosterone is converted (or aromatized) into estrogen.
So it’s not simply the existence of testosterone in the body that gives rise to DHT and Nandrolone, but specifically the way the human body metabolizes testosterone that produces these compounds and, in turn, all of the anabolic steroids derived from them.
Generally speaking, anabolic steroid derivatives tend to possess many of the same characteristics and properties, and to produce many of the same effects, as the parent hormone.
For example, DHT is unable to interact with the aromatase enzyme that converts Nandrolone into estrogen, so metabolizing DHT does not produce estrogen in the way that Nandrolone does.
In turn, no DHT derivative can interact with this enzyme or be metabolized into estrogen.
While analogues, in theory, will share many of the characteristics of its parent, or progenitor, hormone the way DHT derivatives cannot be metabolized into estrogen, this isn’t always the case.
In practice, some anabolic steroids can produce some unexpected effects very different from those seen in their progenitor hormones, in some cases even the opposite of what might be expected.
This is why it is important to remember that though a steroid may be derived from testosterone or another hormone, and is properly considered to be a derivative of the hormone, it is still a completely different anabolic steroid with properties and characteristics all its own, though it likely shares some properties with the parent hormone.
To reiterate, testosterone is the primary anabolic steroid produced in the human body, and is the hormone from which all other anabolic steroids are derived, though other anabolic steroid compounds may have very different properties and produce very different effects than those seen in testosterone.
Why have so many different anabolic steroids been manufactured when they all work on the same basic mechanism of action?
The reason for chemically modifying testosterone or other hormones is to produce variants that produce specific effects on the body, such as to produce effects different from the parent hormone or to make some characteristic more pronounced.
Some analogues or derivatives may be more suitable as medicines for treating certain conditions or diseases than their progenitor, while others are more suitable for some individuals than others than their progenitors
This includes steroidal compounds created for use in children, the elderly, or women, for example.
In other cases, steroids may be used to treat a condition which may actually be exacerbated in some way by testosterone. In these cases, the analogue may produce a desired effect in system or area of the body without producing unwanted effects often seen by testosterone.
One common reason for creating different types of steroids is the goal of creating a perfect anabolic steroid, as can be seen during the period of the 1950s to the 1980s, when developing new steroids seemed to be a favorite endeavor of many chemists.
The goal during this anabolic steroid ‘boom’ was to create the ‘perfect’ anabolic steroid. This would be an anabolic steroid that would be completely safe and would provide all of the benefits of increased muscle mass and athletic performance, without unwanted androgenic or estrogenic side effects.
Thus far, such a steroid has not been developed, as taking steroids for performance enhancement is still not safe.
When considering the use of anabolic steroids for the purposes of athletic performance enhancement, and realizing that different athletes have different goals they want to achieve, they may choose different types of steroids.
One very obvious goal is that of discovering or developing an anabolic steroid was to keep strong anabolic effects while reducing the androgenic effects.
If a steroid could be developed that had stronger anabolic effects with milder androgenic effects, this would obviously be a preferred steroid for many athletes, because of the milder side effects that may come along with it.
Because each athlete has their own individual goals and physiological make up, different steroids are available that athletes use for specific purposes to achieve their goals.
This is especially true for athletes who, for example, may not wish to develop large muscles, but are looking for a sleeker, more slender, physique.
Or for female athletes who are trying to increase their strength and tone their bodies without the more masculinizing effects seen in testosterone and some of the more androgenic steroids, or other effects that could be detrimental to the performance of some athletes.
For example, testosterone, nandrolone, and some other anabolic steroids can cause the body to retain water.
This is due to their ability to interact with the aromatase enzyme that converts them into estrogen.
Beyond the dangerous side effects of gynecomastia and high blood pressure that can come along with this, it can actually be detrimental to athletes engaged in sports requiring speed, such as runners, cyclists, or swimmers, who tend to be slowed by water retention and the extra weight it adds.
These types of athletes have typically gone for anabolic steroids like Winstrol or Anavar, two anabolic steroids unable to be converted into estrogen via metabolism by the aromatase enzyme.
With these types of steroids, the issue of water retention, and added water weight, is avoided, but other side effects like testosterone suppression and cardiovascular concerns are still around.
Stacking steroids refers to the practice of combining steroids in a cycle. Bodybuilders see this as an opportunity to take advantage of the synergistic effects between the chosen steroids to create a highly anabolic cycle or to create a combination that helps the them better achieve certain performance or physique goals.
These are just some of the main reasons for the development of these types of steroids.
It is interesting to note that Dianabol, the first synthetic anabolic steroid derived from testosterone, was also one of the first anabolic steroids designed to enhance athletic performance, rather than for a medical purpose.
Previous synthetic steroids had been developed for medical uses rather than athletic performance. That said, testosterone and testosterone derivatives had been used to increase aggression as far back as the 1940s, when the Nazis experimented with them on prisoners.
It is also interesting to note that anabolic steroids were not the first substances used to enhance athletic performance.
During the Olympic games in Ancient Greece (from 776 to 393 BCE), athletes used to use opium juice, wine, and herbal medications in an attempt to improve their performance.
They would also gorge themselves on meat, not a dietary staple, and to eat animal hearts or testicles in an attempt to increase their speed or power. The modern term ‘doping’ comes from the Dutch word ‘doop’, which referred to the viscous opium juice used by the Greek athletes.
The list of banned steroids is so big that it would be impossible to list and describe all of them here, unfortunately.
We’ve written over hundreds of thousands of words on the topic of steroids here, and even we don’t know all of the different types of illegal steroids in the world.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the US Olympic Committee (UOC) stand with over 625 official sports organizations around the world.
They have collectively adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency‘s (WADA) official performance enhancing steroid “Code” which bans 192 of these performance enhancing substances, formulations and methods of use.
Performance enhancing drugs can be added and deleted from the list by WADA more or less at will- however not all of the specific banned substances are named explicitly.
As you can imagine, this can make it difficult to know which are allowed and which are not.
But, staying away from anabolic steroid abuse is the best way to avoid breaking the law or being banned from your sport.
Caroline Hatton, Ph.D., and a doping prevention consultant, said “The key in making prohibition lists work is they avoid finiteness.
Rather than listing each banned drug one by one, they list whole drug classes and name certain drugs only as examples.
This is to prevent users who take designer drugs from saying they didn’t break a specific rule because the drug that they use was not listed.”
In other words, they open the jaws of the trap as widely as possible in order to catch as many offenders as they possibly can.
But it’s understandable, after all- how can we justify these people’s exorbitantly high salaries if they don’t have a hell of a lot of busy work to do?
So, whether or not any item on the above list of anabolic steroids for bodybuilding is actually named on the WADA list, you can be sure that the stipulations would cover any of them.
Even if they don’t- the rules are flexible enough to engulf anyone caught doping.
Each sports organization which adopts this “Code” is also responsible for the enforcement of it via drug testing and penalties for non-compliance.
Several major sports leagues, like Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Basketball Association (NBA), have yet to adopt WADA’s “Code.”
While this may be surprising, it stands to reason that were any of these major sports organizations to adopt the code, it would mean massive reductions in the performance standards of their teams and players.
It would almost certainly hurt the popularity of these games.
Their are two primary ways to group steroids in terms of types when those products are used to improve muscle or enhance athleticism.
These different types are not mutually exclusive.
Some steroids come in both injectable and oral forms. As well, some steroids have properties that lend themselves to both cutting and bulking cycles.
Dianabol and Anadrol are widely considered to be bulking steroids because their mechanism of action primarily assists in rapid muscle development.
The following is what bodybuilders consider to be a list of bulking steroids
Strength steroids like Deca Durabolin and Trenbolone have been used to promote athletic tenacity and performance.
List of strength steroids
Then you have steroids that help you cut body fat and retain lean muscle tissue, appropriately titled “cutting steroids.” Winstrol and Anavar are good examples.

While all of the steroids on our list of anabolic steroids names will differ in properties to some degree, it is fair to say that they all have properties in common- both positive and negative.
Anyone looking to buy steroids should not just consider all of the following factors related to performance, but also the dangerous risks associated with using steroids;
Steroids have been taken to:
Cause positive effects
But are more likely to cause negative effects
If you are looking to buy steroids, we recommend that you avoid them entirely by using a dietary supplement. The risks to your health and safety, being on the right side of the law, and of receiving poor quality products is far too high.
It’s essential to research the drug you want fully. Know it inside and out. Know how much it costs in every form. Know if it is legal where you live (it probably is illegal).
Read more than one steroids blog to find answers- those are the only people who will speak openly about how to use steroids for performance enhancement. Be aware that they often don’t tell you about the downsides, and only focus on the positives.
Which steroid is best for bodybuilding?
If you want to know the best anabolic steroid overall, it’s Winstrol. Hands down. But that doesn’t mean it’s the best for your needs and your biology.
If you’re looking to buy steroids online, you must (read with great emphasis) fully and completely research everything from the drug itself to the vendor to the location and reputation of the source.
Before you order steroids online, do lots of research on the full list of anabolic steroids. It is the best way to find the best injectable steroid or oral turinabol that’s right for you.
The first steroid synthetically produced was testosterone. In August of 1935 it was first synthesized by Adolf Butenandt and G Hanisch. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
The Russians were the first to use them for performance-enhancement in sports. Their success had the USA Olympic team’s physician create his own anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) with a team of chemist.
The first steroid invented for performance enhancement was called Dianabol Methandrostenolone (Methandienone/Metandienone).
Why would a Doctor prescribe steroids? Dianabol was prescribed for burn victims. Other steroids are used to induce male puberty, treat cancer and AIDS, as well as stimulate muscle growth.
Today names of steroids for inflammation and allergies come up as some of the most frequently used prescription steroids by doctors.
What drugs are considered steroids?
All of the anabolic androgenic steroids we have listed above are classified as steroid drugs. With the exception of Dianabol, all of them have been used historically for therapeutic purposes.
However, some of the steroids listed, such as Equipoise or Trenbolone, are used in veterinary medicine and have never been approved for human consumption.
There are also a collection of drugs called Corticosteroids that are often used to treat inflammation, but these are not detailed here because they have very little use for performance-enhancement.
What type of drugs are anabolic steroids?
What draws the wide variety of anabolic androgenic steroids together is the foundational hormone on which they are crafted.
That hormone is testosterone. So the type of drugs that are considered anabolic steroids are those which have testosterone as their chemical launch point.
To say that something is “anabolic” is to say that the drug has a principal muscle-building function.
The “androgenic” descriptor points to the influence of testosterone, because testosterone is the body’s chief androgen. If something is androgenic, it promotes the development of male sexual characteristics.
That’s why women have to be careful when it comes to steroids that are androgenic, and should avoid those that have high androgenic ratings. In fact, they should be avoiding steroids altogether if the goal is a better body or performance enhancement. It’s simply not worth the risk of side effects.
Are anabolic steroids legal?
In most countries, steroids are legal with a prescription for medical and therapeutic purposes. They are not legal for bodybuilding.
When did steroids become illegal in the United States? Anabolic androgenic steroids were added to the controlled substances act as schedule III drugs in the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990.
Ben Johnson‘s controversial victory at the 1988 summer Olympics sparked the debate about whether steroids should be legal or not.
If you want to improve your performance without buying illegal steroids, try buying from this list of legal steroids.
If you’re looking for non-liver toxic oral steroids, you probably need to look into what some people call steroid alternative supplements. Although these are not real steroids, they are dietary supplements designed to support various bodybuilding goals.
These are considered to be the safest way to accomplish your goals as they have almost zero side effects.
The safest real steroid for bodybuilding is considered by some bodybuilders to be Anavar, but in reality even this steroid has a lot of side effects and health risks associated with use.
Anavar, Clenbuterol and Winstrol are considered by some to be the best performance enhancing drugs for women.
Most steroids cause side effects that are too dangerous for female bodies, but even these ones put your body at a much higher risk than is worth it.
Some of the most common steroid injections that bodybuilders talk about are Trenbolone, Deca Durabolin, Dianabol, Winstrol Depot, and Testosterone.
The oral steroids list includes Anadrol, Anavar, Clenbuterol, Dianabol, and Winstrol.
