Proviron steroid has been around for decades.
It’s one of the older forms of synthetic anabolic androgenic steroids in oral form.
Like other anabolic androgenic steroids, there are some Proviron benefits and some bad sides.
Even users are divided in their opinions regarding benefits, achievements, and of course, potential side effects.
Proviron/mesterolone is also known by many other chemical names depending on country of origin and manufacturer. Just a few include:
In fact, the steroid is known by several dozen synonyms, brand names, and chemical names based on its molecular structure.
Numerous pharmaceutical companies have manufactured the drug since the mid-1930s.
It can be identified through its molecular formula: C20H32O2.
Like other anabolic androgenic steroids, bodybuilders use it for nonmedical purposes, meaning accelerated muscle mass growth and enhanced athletic performance. It’s been used on horses in the racehorse industry.
While anabolic in nature, Proviron steroid doesn’t tend to cause severe androgenic side effects.
In medical scenarios, mesterolone has been used as a treatment for hypogonadism or low testosterone levels in patients to increase sperm manufacture and volume.
The drug is not available in the US, as it was never approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Users typically purchase it from underground labs and black-market resources from European countries.
Proviron functions like dihydrotestosterone, a metabolite of testosterone. It has been modified so that when taken orally many of its effects and activities remain intact.
Oral testosterone has to pass through digestive processes prior to absorption by the body, and much of the efficacy of other oral steroids are damaged and/or decreased due to this process.
Proviron provides a slightly greater potential for anabolic properties than testosterone, with perhaps half or less of the androgenic side effects often associated with testosterone.
For treating androgenic deficiency, 25mg of Proviron is taken three times a day for a time, followed by a maintenance dose of 25mg per day.
The same dose is used when treating male infertility, but may be used with other fertility drugs.
For athletic enhancement, the typical dose ranges from 50-150mg per day to reduce estrogen and associated side effects and perhaps to improve fertility after a steroid cycle.
For female athletes, 25mg per day is felt to be enough to produce desired results. Proviron is not approved for female use and is rarely used for more than 4-5 weeks because of the risk of virilization.
Because Proviron is considered to be an androgenic steroid, but not an anabolic steroid, it is not generally used as the primary compound in a steroid cycle.
Rather, it is most often used to supplement anabolic steroid cycles to minimize estrogen effects and to harden the physique. When used in this way, it can be taken for the duration of a cycle.
The typical dose is 50-100mg daily for men. It is also used in Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) in certain cases to bring down estrogen and increase fertility, though it is not felt to be the most effective compound for this use.
It is attracted and binds to sex hormone binding globulin or SHBG, which increases levels of free testosterone circulating in the body.
This results in increased power, stamina, and physical enhancement results.
Proviron inhibits aromatization or conversion of testosterone to estrogen.
This means less worry about female-like side effects such as bloating, gynecomastia, and yes, even mood swings.
Like other anabolic androgenic steroids, Proviron also has strong binding capabilities to androgen receptors. This activity enhances metabolic functions including fat burn.
Proviron, because of its function as an androgen receptor, is also known to be less likely to inhibit natural sperm production than other anabolic androgenic steroids – at certain doses.
The higher the Proviron dosage, the increased potential for negative side effects, including testosterone suppression.
When taken in higher doses (i.e. 300 mg daily or over) such side effects are certainly possible. Some people are just sensitive to the drug and may experience side effects at much lower doses.
Speak to your doctor if you want to use Proviron for your sexdrive/libido or sperm count.
Proviron is the brand name of the compound Mesterolone.
Proviron was developed in 1934 by Schering, a German multinational pharmaceutical company, and is one of the oldest steroids developed for medicinal purposes.
Proviron is even older than Methyltestosterone (developed in 1935) and Testosterone Propionate (developed in 1937), though it is not quite as well known as these, perhaps due to its weakness as an anabolic compound.
While Proviron has been around for a long time, it continues to be known as a highly effective treatment in medical applications with a reputation for being safe and well tolerated by most patients.
Proviron is most often used for older men experiencing declining levels of androgen, which can cause decreased sex drive, infertility, and reduced feelings of wellness.
Much of the medical research regarding Proviron is its use to increase male fertility. It is a misconception that Proviron increases luteinizing hormone (LH). In reality, it provides enough androgenic activity to stimulate spermatogenesis.
Most anabolic steroids suppress the production of certain gonadotropins, while Proviron’s effects are very slight in comparison.
Mesterolone is still produced by Schering, though it is also produced by other companies and goes by other names in other countries.
In Germany, it is produced by Asche under the name Pluriviron and by Jenepharm under the name Vistimon.
In India, it is produced by Brown and Burke under the name Restore. Interestingly, it has never been approved for medical use in the United States.
What does Proviron do for men?
Apart from counteracting estrogenic side effects to a certain degree, Proviron has another positive effect that male bodybuilders seek.
Proviron has an affinity for Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG). SHBG is a protein that binds to Testosterone and other anabolic steroids.
Once bound, the hormones are made inactive. Stacking Proviron with other anabolic steroids can amplify the activity of those steroids as it binds with SHBG in their place, leading to higher amounts of the other steroids to be free in the bloodstream.
This is an advantage that pertains only to men, since women are not concerned with increasing the amount of free testosterone in their body.
As mentioned, Proviron is also believed to function as an aromatase inhibitor, blocking the estrogenic side effects of certain anabolic steroids. As an aromatase inhibitor, it is not as strong as some others such as Aromasin or Arimidex.
Estrogenic side effects like bloating and the unnatural development of male breast tissue are issues particularly relevant to men and their appearance.
Is Proviron anabolic?
Proviron is an oral compound with very weak anabolic activity, so weak that it is not considered to be an anabolic steroid.
Proviron is derived from DHT by adding a methyl group to the first carbon atom to create 1-methyl dihydrotestosterone, which is only very slightly anabolic.
For this reason, it is considered an androgenic steroid, not anabolic.
Like DHT, Proviron is metabolized quickly as soon as it enters the muscle.
This is a problem with DHT. Upon entering muscle tissue, it is converted by the enzyme 3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase into a compound with no anabolic effects.
There is a common misconception that Proviron’s anabolic weakness is because it blocks androgen receptors. In reality, it is simply metabolized too quickly for it to produce any anabolic effects.
Any hormone can have a huge influence over not only its own functions and activities in the body, but the production and functions of other hormones, glands, and body functions.
The same applies to Proviron mesterolone regardless of dosage. Steroid use can and does contribute to adverse reactions. They’re not always dosage dependent.
Some of the side effects associated with Proviron are similar to those of other anabolic androgenic steroids. Even at low dosages and with short-term use, negative impact is possible.
Bodybuilders like to use products like Proviron steroid because it triggers tissue building (anabolism) while at the same time reducing the potential for catabolism or muscle damage and destruction.
It’s also known to improve muscle mass, power, and strength. Because of these benefits, bodybuilders often take higher than recommended dosages – at least those recommended for medical treatments.
It’s important to use a Proviron PCT after use.
Even though the steroid is rated relatively low in its androgenic potential, and it’s not reported to trigger estrogenic side effects, it still can.
Some progestational and estrogenic-like effects are still possible, depending on dosage and frequency of dosage. Progestins behave much like estrogen in the body so beware.
Androgenic side effects can include changes in skin texture and condition and in some cases, promote male pattern hair loss.
Women should be aware that Proviron steroid may trigger development of masculine type changes in the body including:
As with other anabolic androgenic steroids, Proviron can also affect cholesterol levels that contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular problems and conditions.
