Testosterone for weight loss: is it effective, and more importantly, is it safe?
Testosterone is typically considered a male hormone that gives growing boys and adult men their secondary sex characteristics.
In recent years however, women have been increasingly using testosterone for weight loss.

The primary hormone produced by women’s bodies that provide female sex characteristics is estrogen, and it too is produced in very small amounts in men.
The hormone provides a number of growth and development characteristics for adolescent boys and men including a deeper voice, growth of body and facial hair, maturation of the genitalia, sperm production, and semen volume.
It is also known to encourage development of strong bones, lean muscle mass, a deeper voice, and more.
It is not recommended, mainly because too much of the hormone in a female can contribute to a number of rather surprising, unexpected, and serious side effects.
A woman with increased levels may experience the development of many male characteristics such as growth of facial hair, a deepening voice, and other non-feminine characteristics.
Studies researching the link between testosterone and weight loss are not too common, but one study published in the Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Obesity Journal (“Testosterone and weight loss: the evidence.”) reported an attempt to find a link between therapy in obese or overweight men who were also diagnosed with hypogonadism.
These researchers wanted to know whether the hormone in various forms would lead to an increase of body mass while decreasing fat mass and improving total body composition.
The findings? In obese and overweight men women diagnosed with low testosterone levels, long-term therapy did initiate significant weight loss.
However, this study was limited to male test subjects.
While therapy may serve men well in a number of aspects when it comes to libido, sexual performance, weight loss, and other benefits, the same ratio of benefits are not quite so prevalent in women.
While some women can benefit from low doses of testosterone therapy replacement as a component of estrogen replacement therapy, it is not generally recommended as a weight-loss supplement for women.
It should be noted that the Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved any form of testosterone (cream, pill, or patch) for women, and products designed for men have extremely high doses that should not be taken by women.
In some cases, it can be prescribed in a blended or compounded formula, but only under the supervision and direction of a physician.
Even very low doses for women are experimental at this time and are more focused on those who have adrenal system issues, malfunctioning or underactive pituitary glands, have had their ovaries removed, and other medical situations.
The effect of testosterone on women is naturally different in many ways than the effect it has on men.
Because of higher levels of estrogen, women may gain weight easier than men.
As a woman ages, estrogen and other hormones like progesterone, drop. Dropping levels of estrogen can contribute to weight gain.
At the same time, a drop in women’s testosterone levels (normally between 15 to 70 ng per deciliter, while normal levels in men range 270 to 1070 ng per deciliter) can contribute to loss of lean muscle or muscle mass, which also leads to weight gain.
However, a careful balance between hormones must be maintained in order to gain benefits of testosterone for weight loss, and doing this under a doctor’s guidance and supervision is highly recommended.
Women looking for testosterone supplements to lose weight should use caution when considering such an approach.

Women and men are encouraged to adopt a healthier and balanced diet and increase levels of exercise not only for beneficial, long-lasting, and safe weight loss, but to improve production of hormones in the body.
Doing so naturally contributes to lean body mass, decreased fat storage, and overall health and wellness.
