Clomiphene is a way for the body to increase testosterone in the blood and in the testis simultaneously.
Anastrozole was originally developed and used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women, but it can be used to help benefit athletes who wish to improve their athletic abilities.

Chael Sonnen is not the first UFC champion to be suspended for these drugs.

As time goes on, the list of banned substances grows to include many of the performance enhancing drugs that are currently legal and serve a medical purpose.
Chael Sonnen appealed his suspension siting that he had a condition called hypogonadism, which prevents the testis from producing the proper amount of testosterone, and that his doctor had prescribed testosterone replacement therapy to combat the condition.
Although he had a legitimate argument for testing positive for some of the substances in his system, he could not explain some of the substances found in his system that had been banned for quite some time.
He had known that the substances were illegal, so the California State Athletic Commission upheld his suspension in light of the evidence that was presented.
There is quite a bit of debate as to which substances should, and should not be allowed in MMA currently.
Although many may contest his suspension, it is still a rule that professional MMA fighters may not use any of the five substances found in Chael’s positive drug test.
Chael Sonnen had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs not once, but twice throughout his career.
His first positive drug test occurred in 2004, and his opponent tested positive as well. The fight was then canceled. The second positive test was in 2014.
With the level of popularity that MMA has created, the playing field has become more competitive. More and more substances are being banned and tested for more regularly.
